SUMMARY:Birmingham Tall Building Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Sprinkler Save
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; West Midlands Fire & Rescue Service. (WMFRS)\nIncident; Fire.\nWhen; 12 April 2023.\nTime of call; 02:00.\nWhere\, Salisbury Tower\, 55 Middleway View\, Lady Wood Birmingham.\nOccupancy: Purpose built Flat 10 or more stories.\nAutomatic fire suppression System; BS9251:2014 Residential sprinkler system.\n\nWMFRS have reported the fire involving a residential block of flats resulting in the activation of the premises residential sprinkler system. \nBackground \n\nAs part of a 3-year programme\, Birmingham City Council approved the installation of retrofitting residential sprinkler systems in 213 high-rise residential blocks of flats in June 2017.\nPrior to this sprinklers were retrofitted into all the communal bin areas of their residential tower block property portfolio.\n\n The Premises \n\n20 Storey residential block of flats.\nContaining\n\n\n116 Flats.\nGround floor common room\, refuse store\, caretakers’ office\, and storage area.\n\n Residential Sprinkler System \n\nBS9251:2014 Residential sprinkler system.\nSprinkler coverage apartments\, ground floor common room\, refuse store\, caretakers’ office\, and storage area.\nCommon ways and stairs not sprinkler protected deemed fire sterile\, managed.\nCategory 3 Enhanced water supply.\n(Dual Pumps\, 60 minutes full holding capacity tank.\nGenerator backup to one pump.\nFRS emergency inlet.\n\nThe Incident \n\nFour fire appliances\, one aerial platform was mobilised by Staffordshire and West Midlands fire control to a tall building fire\, involving a residential flat on the tenth storey of the building.\nFire survival guidance was provided to the family over the telephone by Staffordshire and West Midlands fire control due to smoke percolating throughout the flat compromising the families means of escape.\n3 minutes after being mobilised\, operational crews identified that the fire had been extinguished by the activation of the residential sprinkler system.\nAllowing firefighters to assist the family from their dwelling to a place of safety.\nThe family were removed to hospital for a precautionary check-up.\nThe cause of the fire is believed to involve an electric bike left on charge in the hallway of the flat\, compromising their means of escape from their dwelling.\n\nThis incident clearly identifies the benefits of installing a correctly designed and installed sprinkler system reducing the rate of production of heat and smoke\, allowing more time for the occupants to escape to safety or be rescued. \n Tall buildings fires are one of the most challenging incidents for fire and rescue services\, sadly demonstrated following the Shirley Towers fire which occurred in a residential tall building in Southampton in 2010 which cost the lives of two firefighters. \nBenefits of residential sprinklers for tall building fires \n\nInternal fire spread within the dwelling contained/controlled or in some cases extinguished.\nPreventing further fire spread from the compartment of origin compromising the means of escape from the common ways.\nRapidly reducing the rate of production of heat and smoke\, preventing flash over\nAllowing firefighters in carrying out search and rescue operations by limiting fire development\, which significantly reduces the risks to firefighters allowing the residents to be safely evacuated from the premises.\n\nThe danger of E-bike and E-scooter when charging \n\nWMFRS press release refers that the cause of the fire involved an electric bike which was on charge.\nCharging batteries or E-bikes and E-scooters should not take place in your escape routes.\nLondon Fire Brigade (LFB) have reported\, fires involving lithium batteries are the fastest growing fire risk in London.\n\n\nIn 2023 LFB have attended on average\, an e-bike or e-scooter fire once every two days.\nIn 2022\, we attended 87 e-bike and 29 e-scooter fires\, a total of 116 fires.\n\n\nThe dangers of Lithium-Ion battery fires should not be underestimated which can develop into significant and unstoppable *thermal runaway fires.\nit should be noted\, Sprinkler protection of lithium-ion batteries is outside the scope of current standard sprinkler design standards e.g.\, EN\, NFPA/FM\, specialist standards are being developed for example NPFA 855\n\nSimon Barry\, Deputy Chief Fire Officer of West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS)\, said: “Sprinklers save lives – as this incident very clearly demonstrates. It could have ended tragically had the council-fitted system not kicked in. \n“Sprinklers are invaluable. They save lives and reduce injuries\, protect firefighters who respond to fires\, and reduce the amount of fire damage to property and the environment.” \nHe added: “Without the sprinklers\, the family could have been very seriously injured or worse. The fire blocked their only way out. The bike battery produced a lot of smoke and fumes\, which quickly spread through the flat. \nFurther guidance/sources \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review\nWest Midland Fire Rescue Service Press Release\nLondon Fire Brigade The danger of e-bike and e-scooter batteries when charging\n\n*Thermal runaway is an uncontrollable chain reaction in lithium -ion batteries that can lead to a fire situation. These reactions cause a dramatic increase in the internal battery temperature causing the inner components of the battery to destabilize\, degrade which eventually leads to the failure of the battery. \n

SUMMARY:Pembrokeshire Specialised Housing Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 26th March 2023\nTime of call; 22:42\nWhere\, Pembrokeshire\nOccupancy; Specialised Housing\nAutomatic fire suppression System; Residential sprinkler system\n\nMid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service have reported the fire involving a Specialised Housing scheme resulting in the activation of the premises residential sprinkler system. \nBackground \n\nSpecialised housing contains some of are most vulnerable residents of society\, suffering with physical/cognitive\, and mental health issues affecting their ability to react to fire and/or an alarm compromising their ability to escape a fire.\nThe benefits of installing fire sprinklers for this type of occupancy are clearly demonstrated following the outcome of this incident.\n\nIncident \n\nInternal fire involving the communal laundry room.\n2 sprinkler heads actuated.\nContaining/controlling the fire prior to the arrival of the fire service\nOn arrival operational crews identified that the fire had been contained/controlled\nFire contained to the compartment of origin\nRequiring limited offensive firefighting action to fully extinguish the fire.\nNo injuries were reported.\nEnquires are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.\n\nLegislation \n\nUnlike Scotland and Wales\, it is not mandatory to install fire sprinklers in new build specialised housing schemes in England.\nBAFSA\, welcome’s the government’s recent proposal for sprinklers to be fitted in new care homes in England a change we have all been calling for in the fire sector for many years\, we would also encourage government to look at fitting sprinklers in new specialised housing schemes following the lead of Scotland and Wales.\n\nNewgrange Care Home Fire \n\nWhen you compare this to the Newgrange care home fire\, housing are most vulnerable residents of society\, the outcome was so much different.\nThe scene of a major fire in 2017 which broke out in the early hours of the morning. The home was occupied by 35 residents\, sprinklers were not fitted. The fire resulted in 33 elderly and immobile residents being rescued by firefighters\, sadly two residents died because of the fire.\n\nIf sprinklers had been fitted the outcome could have been so much different\, following the fire the coroner raised concerns that sprinkler systems are not mandatory in care homes. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) recommended sprinklers be installed. The home was rebuilt – without fire sprinklers. \n \nCredit HFRS \nFurther guidance \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review\nMid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Nottingham School Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Nottingham Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS)\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 17 March 2023\nTime of call; 14:00\nWhere: Sneinton\, Nottinghamshire\nOccupancy: School\, academy\n\nNFRS have reported the following Nottingham Academy fire resulting in the school commercial sprinkler system activating that clearly identifies the benefits of installing fire suppression systems for schools. \nNottingham Academy is a large academy built on two campuses with a capacity of 3750 pupils\, it is one of only a handful of schools in the country with its own nursery\, primary\, Secondary and Sixth form provision. \nThe Incident \n\nFire crews were mobilised from Carlton\, London Road and Stockhill Fire stations.\nOn arrival\, operational crews identified that a small fire in the nursery office was contained and extinguished by the school’s sprinkler system.\nNo injuries were reported.\nThe cause of the fire is currently under investigation.\n\nWatch Manager Wiggan said: “There was only slight fire damage to the room of origin at the school due to them having the correct sprinkler system in place. Without this\, the fire could have spread rapidly and put the school at risk.” \nThey tell a story…………. \nThe reporting of sprinkler saves tell a story bringing the incident to life\, this incident clearly demonstrates the benefits of sprinklers for both life and property protection. \nSchool fires have a devasting impact on both a school and a community\, every year many schools are damaged or destroyed by fires\, affecting the education of pupils across the country causing millions of pounds worth of damage. \nOn this occasion\, the impact of this school fire was minimal due to the decision at the design stage to install fire sprinklers throughout the school: – \n\nFire\, heat/smoke damage contained to the compartment of origin.\nOther locations within the school were unaffected.\nSchools’ continuity allowing pupils/students to return to normality far more efficiently with considerably less disruption.\n\nWhen you compare this to a recent school fire in Yatton Bristol on the 29 May 2023 where sprinklers were not fitted\, the outcome on this occasion was that the school was destroyed by the fire. \nThe image speaks a thousand words……… \n \nImage credit Avon Fire & rescue Service \nLegislation\, did you know it is mandatory for all new schools in Scotland & centrally funded schools in Wales to be fitted with sprinklers. This is not the case for England\, current guidance when first released in 2007\, acknowledged the important role of sprinklers and stated that “all new schools should have fire sprinklers installed except in a few low-risk schools”. \nUnfortunately\, it is possible for designers and developers to circumvent the installation of sprinklers but still improve areas by using other building design guidance. The outcome is new- built schools without fire sprinklers being installed. \nDid you know 219 primary and secondary schools were damaged by fire in 2021/22 in England which is an 35% increase from 2020/21. \nFurther Guidance \n\nBAFSA:- Sprinklers in Schools Animation\nBAFSA:- Sprinkler saves review 2021/2022\nNFCC Sprinkler tool kit 2023\nNFCC sprinklers in schools position statement\nNFRS press release\nBristol Live\, fire destroys primary school

The business value is undetermined but could run to several millions. Alternative arrangements are available on site with other plant machinery available therefore no significant interruption to business. \nIt should be remembered sprinkler systems: – \n\nProtects the longevity of businesses in the long term.\nSafeguards against disastrous major financial and equipment losses\nBusinesses back up and running in a short period of time.\n\n\nContaining a potential major fire to only a minor inconvenience.\nPrevents significant damage or destruction of a building by fire.\nProtect jobs.\n\nThis incident clearly backs up the findings of the recent uk research¹ that sprinklers are. \n\n94% Efficient in their ability to operate.\n99% Efficient in Extinguishing or controlling a fire.\n\nEnvironmental Benefits \nOn a regular occurrence\, images from major fires across the country are published on social media and television\, focusing predominately on both fire appliances\, firefighters tackling to extinguish\, control the fire\, along with managing the large smoke plumes\, generated from waste fires. The incident is then soon forgotten\, old news lost in the cloud. \nHowever\, do we consider the adverse consequences on our natural environment? \n\nAir contamination from the fire/smoke plume and the impact it will have on land and water courses.\nThe impact of fire service firefighting activities\, specifically the water run-off from firefighting hoses/jets containing toxic products.\nOther environmental discharges or released from burned material.\n\n This incident clearly identifies that active fire protection systems\, specifically sprinklers should be seen as part of a holistic approach minimising fire damage as part of a greener approach from the fire sector which is often overlooked. \nLinks‑‑ \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/22\nEfficiency and effectiveness of sprinkler systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from fire service data¹\nThink Sprinkler\, Think Environment Sustainability (Bafsa Sprinkler Focus Magazine November 2022)\nCleveland Fire Brigade\n\n

SUMMARY:Birmingham Tall building Sprinkler Activations\, Refuse Chute/Bin Store Update
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; West Midlands Fire Rescue Service (WMFRS)\nIncident; Refuse chute/bin store fires\nWhere; Birmingham\nUse of premises; Purpose built residential block of flats\nHeight of building; 10 or more stories\nFixed Installation; BS9251:2014\n\nThe following update has been reported by Triangle Fire Systems involving a purpose-built block of flats\, resulting in the premises sprinkler system actuating on 6 specific occasions following fires involving the building’s refuse chute/bin store within a 8 month period. \n Background \n\nAs part of a 3-year programme\, Birmingham Council approved the installation of retrofitting residential sprinkler systems in all their high-rise residential block of flats in 2017 which included the removal of combustible material from the façade where it was identified by laboratories\, and the replacement of window infill panels with A2 fire rated products.\nPrior to this programme\, Birmingham council completed a sprinklers programme to install sprinklers in all the communal bin areas of their residential tower block property portfolio\nThis approach implemented by Birmingham city council should be applauded\, the outcome of which will provide a further layer of safety from fire for both their residents\, firefighters.\n\nResidential Sprinkler System \n\nBS9251:2014\nCategory 3\nSprinkler head VK486\nWater supply 60-minute tank (16000L)\nEnhancements: –\n\n\nDual Pumps\nBack up power supply diesel generator\n\n\nFRS inlet\nRemote monitoring\n\n6x Reported Incidents within the space of 8 months \n\n4\, May 2022\n12\, 13  August 2022\n24 September 2022\n25 November 2022\n17 December 2022\n\nThe incidents \nIt is reported that on each occasion. \n\nlit refuse was dropped down the refuse chute to the refuse store below\nActivating the premises sprinkler system\n1 sprinkler head actuated on each occasion\nContaining\, controlling\, or extinguishing the fire to the compartment of origin.\nThe sprinkler system enhancements were not activated\n\nDanger of Refuse Chute/bin store fires \nThese types of fires can have a dramatic effect on the safety of the residents\, specifically where refuse chutes and access hatches can sometimes be found directly opening onto protected corridors\, lobbies\, and stairs\, so providing the potential for the spread of fire and smoke to the common escape routes \nIt is therefore best practice in these situations. \n\nAutomatic fire-resisting shutter should be fitted at the base of the refuse chute to restrict the spread of fire and smoke from a fire in the bin room. The shutter should\, as a minimum\, be operated on a fixed temperature fusible link.\nBespoke sprinkler system\, Further protection can be provided by the installation of a sprinkler system located over the bins\, with either frangible bulb or fusible link sprinkler heads\, or open sprinkler heads with water discharge controlled by smoke detectors.\n\nImportance of Fire Safety Management \nIt is paramount that those designated fire safety managers who have responsibility for fire safety within a building ensure that all fire protection measures in a building can function effectively in the event of a fire including. \n\nWhere the sprinkler alarm functionality is integrated into the premises emergency plan allowing the appropriate emergency response allowing the attendance of the FRS. The actuation of a sprinkler head should be taken as a confirmed fire.\nRefuse fusible-link automatic fire resisting shutters.\n\nManagement is key ensuring the premises fire safety systems are operable in the event of a fire\, reinforced in an open letter from the LFB in 2020\, forwarded to those responsible for fire specifically aimed at shopping centres\, identifying the importance of maintaining fire safety systems. This principle applies to all buildings where fixed installations are installed. \n Incident Recording System Data \n It is reported that where sprinklers were present and actuated in purpose-built block of flats within Great Britain  refuse stores accounted for 173 incidents\, West Midland Fire Service attended 71. \n\n41 x Incidents were either contained/controlled\n27 x Incidents extinguished\n2 x Did not contain/control\n1x Not known\n\nThis data clearly supports the most recent ¹publication commissioned by the National Fire Chiefs Council\, National fire Sprinkler Network\, it was reported that their track record across all building types where sprinklers were identified as present\, operated were 99% efficient in extinguishing or controlling a fire\, 94% efficient in their ability to operate This was further evidenced by the ²Sprinklers Saves UK Annual Review 2021/22 which reinforces the above-mentioned findings that fire sprinklers have a good track record in reducing the impact of fire. \n  \n \n\nThis incident clearly demonstrates the benefits of retrofitting sprinkler systems as part of a package of fire safety measures protecting high risk areas such as refuse chutes/refuse stores prone to malicious acts\nProtecting life/property with the clear benefits it brings for the environment.\n\n*FOI Requests for Incident Recording System Data relating to primary fires attended by FRSs in which sprinklers were present for England\, Scotland\, and Wales for the financial years 2018/19 to 2021/2022 \n Links \nBAFSA Incident Data Reports\, Focus on sprinklers within high rise residential flats \n¹ Efficiency and Effectiveness of Sprinkler Systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from Fire Service Data – Optimal Economics 2017 \n² Sprinkler Saves UK\, Annual Review 2021/22 \nLondon Fire Brigade open letter to shopping centre managers \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tyne and Wear FRS\, Joint Working with Partners - Surefire Ultraguard Activation Save
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. (TWFRS)\nLocation; Gateshead.\nLocation of fire; House\, room.\nAutomatic Fire Suppression System; Water Mist Personal Protection System Ultraguard. (PPS)\n\n“This is an excellent example of partnership working to achieve a positive outcome for a vulnerable community member and highlights best practice for these kinds of cases\, moving forward.” Explained Shaun Kelly\, Prevention Manager for TWFRS. \nOur thanks to both TWFRS\, Surefire for reporting this positive news story the second reported successful Automatic Fire Suppression System (AFSS) save reported to sprinkler saves UK demonstrating the benefits of installing PPS protecting our most vulnerable community members from fire. \nReaffirming the importance of reporting \n\nAFSS activations to Sprinkler Saves Uk\, allowing trends\, anomalies to be identified in the emerging UK sprinkler firefighting industry allowing the continued review of technical standards ensuring best practice within the sprinkler\, fire industry.\nCase studies\, on this occasion the importance of joint working with partners to achieve a positive outcome for a vulnerable community member from fire.\n\nThe importance of installing AFSS as part of a package of fire safety measures where a vulnerable person has been identified at a higher-than-average risk to from fire due to their: \n\nPropensity to contribute to the starting off or development of a fire.\nCapacity to respond appropriately to signs of a fire.\nAbility to self-evacuate.\n\nTo satisfy the Fire and Rescue Service\, the UltraGuard PPS was chosen to protect the community member as it is certified to LPS 1655 (LPCB Third Party Approval Standard). The importance of a third-party approval standard should not be underestimated as it provides confidence about the design\, performance\, and reliability of these systems in practice. \nGateshead Case Study \nIn September 2022 TWFRS received a 999 call to a house fire in the Gateshead area\, resulting from a Care Call monitored alarm activation. The occupier\, Mr D was rescued from the property and conveyed to hospital suffering from breathing difficulties. The cause of the fire was accidental\, and a safeguarding referral was submitted to the local authority due to concerns for Mr D including self-neglect\, alcohol issues\, hoarding and mental health issues. \nIn October fire crews were called to a second house fire at the same address. Mr D was rescued by fire crews and required hospital treatment for breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation. A further safeguarding referral was made with the same concerns. Due to the extensive fire damage following the second fire\, the property was deemed uninhabitable. Discussions were held with housing company and Mr D was relocated to a hotel following his discharge from hospital\, until a new property was secured for him. He successfully moved into his new address a short time later. \nOn 21 December fire crews were mobilised to a fire at Mr Ds new address. Mr D was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment which resulted in a lengthy admission. Another safeguarding referral was submitted\, and a request was made for an emergency meeting to be held due to the fact this was an extremely vulnerable individual; elderly\, lived alone\, smoker\, alcohol issues. Mr D had been involved in three significant house fires over a three-month period\, on every occasion he had to be rescued by fire crews and required hospital treatment. An urgent multi-agency safeguarding meeting was held on 22 December\, further meetings led to agreements by partner agencies to carry out the following action: \n\nAs Mr D was known to smoke in bed\, the existing monitored alarm was extended to include the bedroom\nInstallation of Surefire UltraGuard personal fire protection system within the property.\nJoint visit by Housing and TWFRS to conduct a Safe and Well check\nFire retardant bedding\, throw and mat issued\nReferral to befriending services for Mr D due to feelings of isolation\nOffer of referral to address alcohol dependency (this was declined by Mr D)\nReferral to the fall’s clinic\nDaily welfare calls from the local Housing Warden\n\nBetween January and February Mr D withdrew his engagement with housing and refused daily calls from the warden. He also refused to engage with the Gateshead Recovery partnership for support with his alcohol dependency and withdrew consent for the installation of the monitored smoke alarm in the bedroom. Further safeguarding meetings were held to discuss the ongoing and increasing concerns from partners\, particularly the high fire risk. Partners worked together to re-engage Mr D and because of hard work and persistence from all partners\, the misting system and smoke alarm were installed. \nA further fire incident has occurred in Mr Ds home\, however the detection activated causing the misting system to deploy preventing both serious damage to the property but most importantly\, no injury to the occupier. This case study shows how a high risk and vulnerable occupier can be protected by partner agencies working towards a common goal. \nRisk Profile/ Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan \nThese types of fires clearly show the importance of Identifying community members that are most vulnerable by the completion of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).   This is likely to be completed in premises where the risk to persons in a fire situation is increased due to cognitive or mobility impairments. Personal protection systems combine early warning of a fire through smoke detection and water mist for the delivery of suppression.  Early detection of a fire is important is important\, as occupants can quickly become overwhelmed by smoke and toxic gases\, the biggest killer in a fire. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the risk profile of the vulnerable person is appropriate for PPS. For example\, a vulnerable person who is mobile and living in a multi roomed flat has the potential to be affected by a fire anywhere in their home. As a result\, they would possibly require a AFSS (such as a sprinkler system that is designed\, installed and maintained to BS9251 Fire sprinkler systems for domestic and residential occupancies providing full coverage within the premises. \nWhat are Personal Protection Systems? \n\nUnlike sprinkler systems\, PPS are local application water mist fire suppression system combining smoke detection\nDesigned to specifically protect vulnerable individuals with mobility and disability impairments from the threat of fire risk in residential and domestic occupancies who are unlikely to easily escape without assistance in the event of a fire\nDeveloped in response to analysis of fatal fires in dwellings where many victims had physical and/or mental health impairment\nThe publication\, “Guidance on the use\, deployment and limitations of Personal Protection Systems in the homes of vulnerable people” developed by BRE Global and the London Fire Brigade\, to assist in understanding and reducing fire risk to vulnerable people\nBRE Global introduced a loss prevention standard\, LPS 1655 covering the requirements and test methods for the LPCB approval of Personal Protection Systems.\n\nKey components \n\nPortable self-contained unit\n3-day battery back-up in case of mains failure\nDelivers 10 minutes of water mist\nActivation\, double knock multi sensor detectors\nNozzle discharges a spray pattern\nCapable of suppressing an area of16m2\, and controlling an area of 32m²\nParameters of the system allow fast burning\, slow smouldering fires to be detected\nFacility for remote monitoring\nIf you want to make a difference working in the fire sector\, we need your assistance……\n\nTo make sprinklers the norm and not the exception – we need the evidence. Encouraging the FRS to promote\, collate\, report sprinkler activations to Sprinkler Saves UK will help to create a central and comprehensive record of fire incidents where sprinklers played their role in containing/controlling or extinguishing the fire. \nIf you hear of a save report it using this link \nLinks/further reading \n\nBRE/LFB publication\, “Guidance on the use\, deployment and limitations of Personal Protection Systems in the homes of vulnerable people”\nLoss Prevention Standard\, 1655 Requirements and test methods for the LPCB approval of Personal Protection Water mist Systems. SUMMARY:City of London Market Commercial Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 14 December 2022\nWhere\, City of London\nTime of call: 18:15\nTime of Stop: 19:18\nUse of premises; Market\nLocation of incident: Refrigeration Unit\nFixed installation; Automatic fire suppression system (AFSS)\n\nLondon Fire Brigade have reported the above-mentioned 4 pump fire involving a fire within an operational meat market housing a range of stalls and shops resulting in the loss of 3 tonnes of meat within a refrigeration unit. (15 Pig Carcasses) \nThe benefits of installing a commercial sprinkler system for business continuity/life safety is clearly demonstrated following this incident which took place at one of the busiest trading periods of the year. \n\nThe fire was extinguished\, contained/controlled within the ceiling of the refrigeration unit\nThe fire did not spread from compartment of origin\nNo injuries were reported\n\nA relatively small fire was extinguished by the activation of the commercial sprinkler system\, resulting in only a minor inconvenience for the tenants/businesses associated within the market. The market reopened the same evening from midnight with only one shop unit closed due to the fire. \nA London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Sprinklers are the only fire safety system that detects a fire\, suppresses a fire and raises the alarm. “They save lives and protect property and they are especially important where there are vulnerable residents who would find it difficult to escape\, like those with mobility problems.” \nThe Business Sprinkler Alliance\, report that fire is the leading cause of commercial property loss\, with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) noting Uk business with fire property claims of £940 million in 2018. It is why risk-aware businesses understand the importance of physical resilience and recognise the need for effective methods to protect their property. The effective method to do this is through the use of an appropriately designed and installed sprinkler system. \n\nEvidence clearly show that  automatic fire sprinklers prevent large fires because they activate automatically following a fire\nControlling or even extinguishing the blaze before the Fire and Rescue Service arrives.\nThey therefore save lives and protect firefighters who attend incidents\nThey also prevent significant damage or destruction of a building by fire.\nCurrently\, automatic fire sprinklers are not widely used in the UK because the guidance rarely prescribes their use.\n\n  \nSo when are sprinklers required ?\n \nCredit/image  Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service \nLinks/source \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/22\nLFB Press Release\nBusiness Sprinkler Alliance\, sprinkler activation saves leisure facility\nDerbyshire Fire & Rescue Service\, When are sprinklers required

SUMMARY:Thamesmead Recyling Centre Fire
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade (LFB)\nIncident; Fire involving Internal Industrial Shredder\nWhen; 26 October 2022\nTime of incident: 14:09\nTime of stop: 16:32\nWhere\, Thamesmead\, Nathan Way\nUse of premises; Recycling Centre\nFixed installation; Automatic fire suppression system (AFSS)\n\nLFB have reported the above-mentioned incident involving an industrial shredder. \nThe Incident \n\nFour pumping appliances were mobilised  requiring 20 firefighters\nOn arrival crews identified that the fire involved the premises industrial shredder\nThe sprinkler system activated containing/controlling the fire\n\nOutcome \n\nMinimal disruption to business\nReducing damages\, costs to business and the economy as a whole\n\nKey message; As part of a holistic approach Automatic Fire Suppression Systems have been proven to be one of the most effective active fire protection measures containing/controlling these types of fires preventing large costly fires developin \nNational Fire Chiefs Council/Environment Agency \n\n The National Fire Chiefs Council\, recommends that sprinklers are provided in facilities providing waste management and recycling. There is growing evidence that sprinklers are highly effective in controlling fires in these establishments. Uncontrolled fires in waste and recycling facilities are often prolonged\, extremely resource intensive for fire and rescue services and partner authorities. They are also commonly disruptive to local communities and to travel infrastructure.\n\n The Environment Agency (EA) Fire Prevention plans (FPP) \n\nDid you know that EA requires FPP to be submitted with all permit variations and new permit applications (at application stage) for sites that store combustible waste. The FPP needs to be approved by the EA before a permit is granted.\nA fire prevention plan (FPP) is a standalone management system that details the prevention measures and procedures as well as mitigation methods in place to protect against fire whilst carrying out day to day operations on a site.\nA requirement for the FPP is that\, if you store waste in a building \, you must install a fire suppression system. This system should be proportionate to the nature and scale of waste management activities completed and the associated risks.\n\n Since the launch of the sprinkler saves website 7 previous incidents have been reported \n\nFareham Solid recovered fuel facility\nBristol Recycling Centre Centre\nShropshire Recycling Centre\nLondon Recycling Centre\nEnfield Recycling facility \nRufforth Recycling facility\nManchester Waste Site/recycling facility\n\nLinks \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/2022\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkle Association\, Information file\, Fire Suppression Systems for the Waste Management Industry

SUMMARY:ALFRETON INDUSTRIAL SPRINKLER ACTIVATION
DESCRIPTION:image credit A&F Sprinklers \n\nIncident; Fire involving aluminium extrusion machinery\nWhen; 26 October 2022\nTime of incident: 14:00\nWhere\, Derbyshire\nUse of premises; Industrial\nFixed installation; Automatic fire suppression system (AFSS)\n\nA&F Sprinklers have reported the above-mentioned incident resulting in the activation of the premises sprinkler system \nBackground \n\n Aluminium extrusion is widely used in construction\, automobile and aircraft sector\, industrial machinery\, and consumer goods. Since the extrusion process is a thermal process there are many sources of ignition.\n\nThe incident \n\nIt is reported that a fire occurred within the warehouse facility above the aluminium extrusion machinery activating 1x Sprinkler head which contained\, controlled\, and extinguished the fire.\nAllowing the installation to be safely isolated following the fire by the site engineer manager.\n\nBusiness Continuity Management (BCM) \n\nIn-house protocols were in place allowing the system to be reinstated following the incident with the replacement of the sprinkler head (Tyco TY5131) system recharged within 4 hours of the incident.\nEvery business is at risk of disruption from a variety of threats\, as well as fire\, these threats can include flood\, loss of power or even loss of staff. 80% of businesses (without a business continuity plan) that are exposed by a major incident either never re-open or close within 18 months. Almost 1in 5 businesses suffer disruption every year\nThe importance of BCM as a holistic approach that provides a framework for building organizational resilience protecting valuable assets from fire or can significantly mitigate the effects that a fire has upon assets to achieve business continuity clearly demonstrated following this incident.\nCareful consideration by management to understand the importance/role of fixed fire installations installed in their premises\, the outcome of which will allow potential threats to be identified and addressed.\n  \nLinks \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/2022
