SUMMARY: London Commercial Kitchen Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade\nIncident; Kitchen Fire\nDate of Incident; 25 June 2023\nTime of call; 14:05\nWhere\, London\, Wandsworth\nUse of premises; Commercial Public House/Wine Bar\nAutomatic Fire Suppression System (AFSS) Drencher\n\nWe often overlook successful kitchen activations that occur daily in the hospitality sector which successfully contain\, control or even extinguisher the fire by the activation of the premises Automatic Fire Suppression Systems (AFSS).  The term Automatic Fire Suppression Systems covers a variety of suppression systems including systems designed specifically to protect commercial kitchens including wet chemical pre-engineered system. \nThe advantage of these systems compared to your traditional sprinkler system is that they are designed to protect commercial kitchen hoods\, ducts and appliances from fire hazards tested on performance so that can extinguish restaurant cooking fires without splashing or re-igniting cooking grease. \nCommercial kitchens are a key part of many hospitality businesses from restaurants\, hotels\, and cafes to public houses to name a few. The Impact of a fire can significantly result in loss of trade and associated income with the potential of catastrophic damage and potential longer-term closure of the premises. Therefore\, the installation of these systems is paramount for business continuity. \nThe Incident \n\nThe fire involved a deep pan fryer which caught light activating the kitchen ¹drencher system which raised the alarm.\nNo fire spread was reported with damage sustained to the item first ignited.\nNo further firefighting was required following the arrival of the LFB.\nNo major impact on business continuity\nNo injuries reported.\n\n *Did you know the main causes of commercial kitchen fires? \n\nThe use of heated oils/fats and the risk of overheating due to human error or a faulty thermostatic control\nFlames\, sparks\, or hot gases can ignite combustible deposits inside extract ducts.\nFault of failure of cooking equipment\nUnattended cooking activities\n\nBS5306 -0:20 Fire protection installations and equipment on premises. \n\nFurther guidance on choosing the appropriate firefighting medium and type of system for any proposed installation can be found in the above-mentioned publication.\nThe aim of this part of BS 5306 is to aid selection of the appropriate firefighting medium and type of system or equipment by describing the characteristics and most suitable applications of each\nConsideration has been given to the impact of firefighting media\, including toxicity to people\, effect of discharge on visibility\, and danger of use on electrical equipment\, in addition to factors such as monitoring\, testing\, maintenance and user responsibility.\n\n\n ¹ Due to the narrow fields available for the fire officer to select in the active safety system tab of the Incident Recording System\, the suppression system chosen was Drencher. SUMMARY:Scotland Care Home Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Image credit Discovery Fire Sprinklers \n\n\nFire Recue Service; Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS)\nIncident; Fire\, white goods appliance\nWhen; 18 June 2023\nTOC; 20:39\nWhere; Dunblane Scotland\nType of Premises; Residential Care Home\nAutomatic fire suppression System: BS9251\n\n  \n\nDiscovery Fire Sprinklers/SFRS have reported the above-mentioned incident involving a white goods appliance (tumble dryer) which caught fire in the premises laundry room located on the ground floor\nThe premises consists of 2 floors providing accommodation for up to 14 adults which is of stone-built construction.\nThree fire appliances were mobilised by SFRS\, committing a team of 4 Breathing Apparatus for firefighting and ventilation purposes on arrival.\nFirefighting media consisted of one hose reel jet\n\nIt was identified that the fire was contained to the room of origin by the activation of one concealed sprinkler head which actuated containing/controlling the fire before the arrival of the SFRS. \nThe cause of the fire was due to the appliance overheating due to the build-up of lint\, no injuries were reported. \nSprinkler Installation details \n\nInstalled to BS9251:14\nCategory 3\nSprinkler head\, Rapid drop RD208\nWater Supply tank/pump\n\n       \n\nimage 1:- activation of sprinkler head with cover plate detached from its housing\nImage 2 Sprinkler head replaced with cover plate visible\n\nImages credit Discovery Fire Sprinklers images \nThe benefits of the sprinkler systems clearly identified for this incident: \n\nFire was suppressed\, contained to the room of origin\, preventing flash over.\nThe safety of firefighters reinforced\, providing firefighters time to implement their tactical action plan.\nStaff provided with extra time to implement the premises emergency action plan.\n\nThe images clearly indicate the benefits of passive\, active fire protection measures working in unison for this incident. \n\nSprinklers\n\n\nMinor smoke stains sustained to the room of origin with a slight burn visible on the vinyl floor directly below where the appliance was positioned.\nSprinkler head visible following the successful operation\, detachment of the cover plate.\nSprinkler pattern visible at ceiling level.\n\n\nFire door\n\n\nSlight smoke stains to the inside of the door\, positive self-closing device fitted\, indicating the door was closed at the time of the fire\,\n\n\nAutomatic Fire Detection \n\n\nDetector head located directly above the seat of the fire.\n\nThis is the second reported fire to SPRINKLER SAVES UK involving a residential care home within 17 months involving a tumble dryer which caught fire in the premises laundry room. The fire was contained to the room of origin by the residential sprinkler system which actuated suppressing the fire before the arrival of NFRS. No injuries were reported. Full details of this incident can be found by clicking the Wellingborough residential care home sprinkler save in the links section. \nLegislation \nFollowing the tragic events of The Rosepark Care Home Fire in Uddingstom\, South Lanarkshire in 2004 that sadly killed 14 residents\, Scotland responded by making the installation of sprinklers mandatory in all new care homes. Unfortunately\, in England there is no requirement for the installation of sprinklers to protect the most vulnerable residents from fire. \nHowever\, BAFSA strongly welcomes the recent government consultation published on the 23 December 20222 proposal to recommend residential sprinklers in new care homes as part of this consultation process\, we would encourage government to support the mandatory retrofitting of sprinklers in existing care homes for England. \nNew Grange Care Home Fire\, Sprinklers were not fitted \nThe danger of care home fires was clearly demonstrated following the Newgrange Care Home Fire 2017 highlighted in the NFCC Sprinkler Toolkit as part of sprinkler week \n\n\n\nIn April 2017\, a Cheshunt care home in Hertfordshire was the scene of a major fire. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning The care home was occupied by 35 residents. Operational response required 12 fire engines and on arrival crews found residents in their rooms\, many still in bed and unable to move due to their physical condition. Firefighters rescued 33 elderly and \nimmobile residents. Two residents died as a result of the fire. \nIf sprinklers had been fitted in this care home there is strong chance that no residents would have lost their lives. As a result of this fire the coroner raised concerns that sprinkler systems are not mandatory in care homes. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service recommended sprinklers be installed. The home was rebuilt – without fire sprinklers installed. \n\n\n\n \nImage credit HFRS \nSource NFCC Sprinkler tool Kit \nLinks— \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association \, Sprinkler Saves Review 2022/23\nFire Sprinklers Greater London Review 2018-2021\nWellingborough residential care home sprinkler save\nRose Park Care Home Fire Presentation David Mallin Lothian and Boarders Fire & Rescue Service\nGovernment consultation\, recommend sprinklers in care homes\, remove national classifications from Approved Document B\nNFCC Consultation response dated 17 March 2023\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham Tall Building Refuse Chute/Bin Store Activation Update No 2
DESCRIPTION:Image credit Triangle Fire Systems  Ltd ; sprinkler head discharging \n\nFire Rescue Service; West Midlands Fire Rescue Service (WMFRS)\nIncident; Refuse chute/bin store fires\nWhere; Birmingham\nUse of premises; Purpose built residential block of flats.\nFixed Installation; BS9251:2014\n\nDuring the month of June\, Triangle Fire Systems Ltd reported five separate incidents within 5 days involving the activation of the premises residential sprinkler system within the refuse/bin store of three high rise residential purpose-built block of flats. \nMaking a total of 19 incidents within the space of 13 months when you consider the previous Sprinkler Saves May update which reported 14 similar incidents\, justifying Birmingham councils’ decision to install sprinklers in all the communal bin areas of their residential tower block property portfolio. \nPost Grenfell\, Birmingham council continued their commitment to providing its residents with the highest level of fire safety by implementing a 3-year programme for the retrofitting of sprinklers in all their high-rise residential block of flats. The approach should be applauded\, the outcome of which will provide a further layer of safety from fire for both their residents\, firefighters. \nThe specification\, design of the residential sprinkler system (BS9251:2014) for each individual premises was bespoke which included but not limited to \n\nCategory 2-3\nVK486 Sprinkler heads\nWater supply 60-minute tank (16000L)\n\nEnhancements: – \n\nDual Pumps\nBack-up power supply diesel generator\n\n\nFRS inlet\nRemote monitoring\n\n5x Reported Incidents within the space of 5 days. \n\n10\, 14\, 18\, 19\, 21 June 2023\n\nThe incidents \nIt is reported that on each occasion. \n\nApart from one incident lit refuse was dropped down the refuse chute to the refuse store.\nActivating 1 sprinkler head on each occasion.\nContaining\, controlling\, or extinguishing the fire to the compartment of origin.\nNo injuries were reported.\n\n  \n                       \nImage credit Triangle Fire Systems Ltd \n\nImage 1 sprinkler head discharging\nImage 2 sprinkler head isolated\n\nTo make sprinklers the norm we need the evidence\, the reporting of these incidents should not be underestimated driving change\, the outcome of which will entice housing providers to install sprinklers providing a further layer of safety as part of a holistic approach protecting our communities from fire \nDanger of Refuse Chute/bin store fires \nThese types of fires can have a dramatic effect on the safety of the residents\, specifically where refuse chutes and access hatches can sometimes be found directly opening onto protected corridors\, lobbies\, and stairs\, so providing the potential for the spread of fire and smoke to the common escape routes. \nIt is therefore best practice in these situations. \n\nAutomatic fire-resisting shutter should be fitted at the base of the refuse chute to restrict the spread of fire and smoke from a fire in the bin room. The shutter should\, as a minimum\, be operated on a fixed temperature fusible link.\nBespoke sprinkler system\, further protection can be provided by the installation of a sprinkler system located over the bins\, with either frangible bulb or fusible link sprinkler heads\, or open sprinkler heads with water discharge controlled by smoke detectors.\n\nImportance of Fire Safety Management \nIt is paramount that those designated fire safety managers who have responsibility for fire safety within a building ensure that all fire protection measures in a building can function effectively in the event of a fire including. \n\nWhere the sprinkler alarm functionality is integrated into the premises emergency plan\, the cause and effect should be designed to allow the appropriate emergency response allowing the attendance of the FRS. The actuation of a sprinkler head should be taken as a confirmed fire.\nRefuse fusible-link automatic fire resisting shutters.\n\nManagement is key ensuring the premises fire safety systems are operable in the event of a fire\, reinforced in an open letter from the LFB in 2020\, forwarded to those responsible for fire specifically aimed at shopping centres\, identifying the importance of maintaining fire safety systems. This principle applies to all buildings where fixed installations are installed. \n Incident Recording System Data \n It is reported that where sprinklers were present and actuated in purpose-built block of flats within Great Britain refuse stores accounted for 173 incidents\, West Midland Fire Service attended 71. \n\n41 x Incidents were either contained/controlled.\n27 x Incidents extinguished.\n2 x Did not contain/control.\n1x Not known.\n\nThis data clearly supports the most recent ¹publication commissioned by the National Fire Chiefs Council\, National fire Sprinkler Network\, it was reported that their track record across all building types where sprinklers were identified as present\, operated were 99% efficient in extinguishing or controlling a fire\, 94% efficient in their ability to operate This was further evidenced by the ²Sprinklers Saves UK Annual Review 2022/23 which reinforces the above-mentioned findings that fire sprinklers have a good track record in reducing the impact of fire. \n\n¹ Efficiency and Effectiveness of Sprinkler Systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from Fire Service Data – Optimal Economics 2017\n² Sprinkler Saves Uk\, Annual Review 2022/23\n ³BAFSA Incident Data Reports\, Focus on sprinklers within high rise residential flats\n  Further Update Tall building Sprinkler Activations\, Refuse Chute/Bin Store\nLondon Fire Brigade open letter to shopping centre managers

SUMMARY:Wandsworth Recycling Plant Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Recue Service; London Fire Brigade (LFB)\nIncident; Recycling Plant Fire\nWhen; 11/05/2023\nTime of call; 00:46\nStop message; 03:32\nWhere\, Wandsworth\, London\nType of Premises; Recycling Plant\nAutomatic fire suppression System\n\nLFB have reported the above-mentioned incident resulting in the activation of the premises commercial sprinkler system. The premises is responsible for the management of waste delivered to it by local councils within London. \nIncident \n\nAt 00:46\, LFB mobilised fire appliances from Wandsworth\, Battersea\, Fulham\, Chelsea\, and tooting fire stations to a fire at a recycling plant\nOn arrival operational crews identified 100 tonnes of mixed household recycling alight located within a waste disposal site\nThe premises AFSS actuated containing\, controlling the fire.\nTotal fire damage up to 51-100 sqm\nFirefighting media Main branch/jet\nThe cause of the fire is being treated as accidental with the most likely cause the failure of a lithium-ion battery.\n\nA spokesman for LFB said. \n“Lithium batteries should not be placed in the same bins as your regular rubbish or recycling. If they overheat\, they may cause it to catch fire. Instead\, check your local authority’s website for the safest way to dispose of lithium batteries in your area. \n“Lithium batteries store a significant amount of energy in a very small space and are much more powerful compared to other types of batteries. If that energy is released in an uncontrolled way\, then a fire or explosion may result.  \n“Batteries can present a fire risk if they’re overcharged\, short circuited\, submerged in water or damaged\, so it’s really important to protect them against being crushed and dispose of them safely.” \nDangers\, implications of waste fires \nOften difficult to extinguish\, requiring multiple fire rescue services resources for long periods of time. The impact of these fires may be short term or long-term including. \n\nPublic health impacts on responders and communities\nThe public being evacuated or sheltering in place.\nEnvironmental impacts\nPollution of surface and groundwater\nRoad closures\nHigh demand on fire and rescue services and other agency resources\nLarge-scale financial losses and disruption\n\nAutomatic Fire Suppression Systems (AFSS) \n\nThe benefits of suppression containing/controlling these fires should not be under-estimated.\nReducing the volume of fire water run-off which in the quantities likely from FRS innervation is an environmental threat which the Environment agency takes seriously sprinkler waste fires\n\n Business Continuity \n\nThe benefits of suppression were clearly demonstrated following a similar incident involving a Biffa Waste Plant fire.\nPromoted in a video released by Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service/Biffa supporting the benefits of suppression saving the entire facility.\n\n \nLinks— \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/22\nFire Sprinklers Greater London Review 2018-2021\nLFB Press release\nBAFSA Information file no 25 Fire suppression systems for the waste management industry\nGreater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service/Biffa Promotion Video\n\n

SUMMARY:London Community Special School Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 3 May 2023\nTime of call; 14:44\nWhere: Lambeth\nOccupancy: School\,\n\nLFB have reported the following educational fire resulting in the school commercial sprinkler system activating\, extinguishing the fire before the arrival of operational crews\nThe premises is a purpose-built school building constructed in 2013 accommodating up to 110 pupils to meet the need of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities including sensory rooms\, soft playrooms\, hydrotherapy pool. \nThe Incident \n\nFire crews were mobilised to a fire involving an electrical appliance.\nOn arrival\, LFB identified that a small fire was: –\n\nContained and extinguished by the activation of one sprinkler head. \n\nLimiting the fire to the item first ignited with fire damage up to 5sqm\nNo further firefighting was required by the LFB.\nNo injuries were reported.\nThe cause of the fire is currently under investigation.\n\nFrom April 2022 Sprinkler Saves Uk have reported a further seven educational building fires. Which have either contained/controlled or extinguished the fire highlighting the benefits of sprinklers for schools. \n  \n \n  \nLegislation\, did you know it is mandatory for all new schools in Scotland & centrally funded schools in Wales to be fitted with sprinklers. \nThis is not the case for England\, current guidance when first released in 2007\, acknowledged the important role of sprinklers and stated that “all new schools should have fire sprinklers installed except in a few low-risk schools”. \nUnfortunately\, it is possible for designers and developers to circumvent the installation of sprinklers but still improve areas by using other building design guidance. The outcome is new- built schools without fire sprinklers being installed. \nDid you know 219 primary and secondary schools were damaged by fire in 2021/22 in England which is an 35% increase from 2020/21. \nBAFSA have published the following article clearly explaining why schools need sprinklers. Explaining how sprinklers can minimise not just the building devastation but also the human suffering that a fire can inflict. \nWhy schools need Sprinklers \n \nLinks \n\nSprinkler Saves Review 2022/2023\nGreater London Sprinkler Review 2018-2021\nBAFSA\, why sprinklers need schools\nBAFSA Fire Data Report No 5 Fire Incident Data Report Educational Buildings

SUMMARY:Further Update Tall building Sprinkler Activations\, Refuse Chute/Bin Store
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; West Midlands Fire Rescue Service (WMFRS)\nIncident; Refuse chute/bin store fires.\nWhere\, Birmingham\nUse of premises; Purpose built residential block of flats\nHeight of building; 10 or more stories\nFixed Installation; BS9251:2014\n\n \nImage credit Triangle Fire Systems Ltd \n\nJanuary 2023\, Sprinkler Saves Uk reported 6 sprinkler activations following fires involving the building’s refuse chute/bin store within an 8-month period.\nA further 8 sprinkler activations have now been reported by Triangle Fire Systems Ltd following fires involving the building’s refuse chute/bin store\, making a total of 14 activations within a 12-month period.\n\nThese incidents clearly demonstrate the benefits of retrofitting sprinkler systems as part of a package of fire safety measures protecting high risk areas such as refuse chutes/refuse stores prone to malicious acts\, protecting life/property with the clear benefits it brings for the environment. \nBackground \n\nAs part of a 3-year programme\, Birmingham Council approved the installation of retrofitting residential sprinkler systems in all their high-rise residential block of flats in 2017 which included the removal of combustible material from the façade where it was identified by laboratories\, and the replacement of window infill panels with A2 fire rated products.\nPrior to this programme\, Birmingham council completed a sprinklers programme to install sprinklers in all the communal bin areas of their residential tower block property portfolio.\nThis approach implemented by Birmingham city council should be applauded\, the outcome of which will provide a further layer of safety from fire for both their residents\, firefighters.\n\nResidential Sprinkler System \n\nBS9251:2014\nCategory 3\nSprinkler head VK486\nWater supply 60-minute tank (16000L)\nEnhancements: –\n\n\nDual Pumps\nBack-up power supply diesel generator\n\n\nFRS inlet\nRemote monitoring\n\n14 x Reported Incidents within the space of 12 months. \n\n04/05/2022\n12/08/2022\n13/08/2022\n24/09/2022\n25/11/2022\n17/12/2022\n26/01/2023\n05/02/2023\n22/02/2023\n09/03/2023\n12/04/2023\n20/04/2023\n25/04/2023\n03/05/2023\n\nThe incidents \nIt is reported ignition sources included. \n\nlit refuse dropped into the refuse chute to the refuse bin located in the refuse store.\nActivating the premises sprinkler system\n1 sprinkler head actuated on each occasion.\nExtinguishing the fire to the compartment of origin without fire service intervention\n\nDanger of Refuse Chute/bin store fires \nThese types of fires can have a dramatic effect on the safety of the residents\, specifically where refuse chutes and access hatches can sometimes be found directly opening onto protected corridors\, lobbies\, and stairs\, so providing the potential for the spread of fire and smoke to the common escape routes. \n\nWhere the sprinkler alarm functionality is integrated into the premises emergency plan allowing the appropriate emergency response allowing the attendance of the FRS. \n ³Incident Recording System Data \n It is reported that where sprinklers were present and actuated in purpose-built block of flats within Great Britain refuse stores accounted for 173 incidents\, West Midland Fire Service attended 71. \n\n41 x Incidents were either contained/controlled.\n27 x Incidents extinguished.\n2 x Did not contain/control.\n1x Not known.\n\nThis data clearly supports the most recent ¹publication commissioned by the National Fire Chiefs Council\, National fire Sprinkler Network\, it was reported that their track record across all building types where sprinklers were identified as present\, operated were 99% efficient in extinguishing or controlling a fire\, 94% efficient in their ability to operate This was further evidenced by the ²Sprinklers Saves UK Annual Review 2021/22 which reinforces the above-mentioned findings that fire sprinklers have a good track record in reducing the impact of fire. \n*FOI Requests for Incident Recording System Data relating to primary fires attended by FRSs in which sprinklers were present for England\, Scotland\, and Wales for the financial years 2018/19 to 2021/2022 \n Links \n¹ Efficiency and Effectiveness of Sprinkler Systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from Fire Service Data – Optimal Economics 2017 \n² Sprinkler Saves UK\, Annual Review 2021/22 \n ³BAFSA Incident Data Reports\, Focus on sprinklers within high rise residential flats \nLondon Fire Brigade open letter to shopping centre managers

SUMMARY:Derby Shopping Centre Car Park Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Derby Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS)\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 29 April 2023\nTime of call; 10:46\nTime of Stop; 12:45\nIncident closed 13:12\nWhere\, Derby\nOccupancy: Shopping Centre\nAutomatic fire suppression System; BS12845 Sprinkler System\n\nDFRS have reported the following incident involving a motor vehicle fire within a large\, enclosed shopping centre basement car park providing direct access to over 190 shops. \nThe Incident \n\nThree fire appliances were mobilised by DFRS mobilisation control.\nOn arrival\, operational crews identified that a motor vehicle had caught light.\nA team of 4 firefighters were committed wearing breathing apparatus\, identifying that the fire was contained within the engine compartment of the vehicle.\nAs the bonnet of the motor vehicle was opened\, the sprinkler system activated\nContaining and controlling  the fire to within the engine compartment of the motor vehicle.\nPreventing further fire spread to adjacent motor vehicles.\nThe fire was extinguished using one main jet/hose reel.\nDue to heavy smoke logging within the carpark a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke.\nThe premises emergency plan was implemented resulting in the evacuation of the premises.\nNo injuries were reported.\nThe cause of the fire is currently under investigation.\n\n The outcome of this incident could have been so much different when compared to the Kings Dock Car Park Fire where sprinklers were not installed. \n\nThe severe open sided car park fire at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the 31 March 2017 destroyed a seven-story building and up to 1\,400 motor vehicles.\nResulting in Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service commencing investigations into the incident\nPublishing comprehensive report into the fire protection considerations surrounding the fire.\n\nIdentifying\, recommending \n\nSprinklers are effective in both controlling a developing and fully developed fire.\nWithout sprinklers fire is likely to spread from car to car and dangerous levels of smoke are likely for long periods\nDesigners should seriously consider sprinkler provision to avoid multiple vehicle fires\, resulting in huge insurable losses and the possible loss of life.\nCurrent building regulations for car parks should be reviewed in light of this incident.\n\n \n  \nGovernment Concerns \n\nIn 2006\, Communities & Local Government (CLG) Sustainable Buildings Division commissioned the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to carry out\na 3-year project looking at the problems associated with fires in car parks.\nThe research provides valuable information for designers and other building professionals about the hazards and risks associated with modern motor cars.\nThis research has resulted in the publication of: ‘Fire Spread in Car Parks’ BD2552’ published in 2010 by CLG.\n\nOf particular interest\, the report highlighted the fact that the provision of a automatic fire sprinkler system can resist an outbreak of fire to the vehicle of origin-and this allow safe entry for firefighters to fully extinguish any remnants of a fire. \nImportance of Management \nIt should be remembered sprinklers control the size of the fire\, reduce the amount of smoke produced. Shopping centres are one of the most complex buildings that often include a variety of uses within the complex\, leisure areas\, hotels\, apartments\, cinemas\, and offices underground car parks \nTherefore\, require a high standard of management compared to other building uses reflected with the provision of complex control rooms in many cases. \nAllowing the officer in charge in the event of a fire to implement a comprehensive tactical plan interacting with the fixed fire installations\, using live CCTV footage. \nManagement is key ensuring the premises fire safety systems are operable in the event of a fire including sprinklers\, fire alarm system\, dry/wet risers\, smoke extraction units and fire curtains. \nTo highlight this\, London Fire Brigade published an open letter in 2020\, to those responsible for fire safety in shopping centres. Highlighting the importance of maintaining fire safety systems including the premises sprinkler system. \nFurther Guidance \n\nBAFSA Sprinklers in Car Parks Information File 10a\nBAFSA Sprinkler Saves Review\nDFRS\nKings Dock Car Park Fire Report\nLFB Open Letter\nDerby Telegraph.co.uk\n\n

SUMMARY:Greater London Tall Building Kitchen Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade (LFB)\nIncident; Kitchen fire\nDate of incident; 26 April 2023\nTime of call; 20:23\nWhere\, Newham\, London\nUse of premises; Purpose built residential block of flats\, 10 or more storeys.\n\nLFB have reported the above-mentioned fire involving an electrical appliance within the kitchen extinguished by the activation of the premises sprinkler system\, no further firefighting was required. Fire spread was limited to item 1st ignited with total damage reported to be 50-100sqm. \nThis incident demonstrates that a correctly designed and installed sprinkler system can detect\, raise the alarm and control or in this case extinguish a fire at an early stage of development and activate an alarm. \n\nProtecting firefighters\nProtecting\, reducing risk to life\nProtecting property\n\nAdding  further evidence to the findings of the BAFSA publication focusing on incidents in Greater London where fire sprinklers have helped protect our communities from fire. Fire Sprinklers: Greater London Review\, provides powerful evidence of the role sprinklers play\, as part of an appropriate package of fire safety measures\, in reducing the impact of fire on people property and the environment. \nThe review is broken down into three key areas: a look at fire trends in Greater London for the period 2018-2021 with reference to the fire datasets captured by the IRS\, an overview of fire data-sets for the same period where sprinklers were recorded as being present in three key property types – and finally a collection of AFSS sprinkler save case studies that were reported to the Sprinkler Saves website. \nCopies of the review can be downloaded here

It could have ended tragically had the council-fitted system not kicked in. \n“Sprinklers are invaluable. They save lives and reduce injuries\, protect firefighters who respond to fires\, and reduce the amount of fire damage to property and the environment.” \nHe added: “Without the sprinklers\, the family could have been very seriously injured or worse. The fire blocked their only way out. The bike battery produced a lot of smoke and fumes\, which quickly spread through the flat. \nFurther guidance/sources \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review\nWest Midland Fire Rescue Service Press Release\nLondon Fire Brigade The danger of e-bike and e-scooter batteries when charging\n\n*Thermal runaway is an uncontrollable chain reaction in lithium -ion batteries that can lead to a fire situation. These reactions cause a dramatic increase in the internal battery temperature causing the inner components of the battery to destabilize\, degrade which eventually leads to the failure of the battery. \n

SUMMARY:Pembrokeshire Specialised Housing Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 26th March 2023\nTime of call; 22:42\nWhere\, Pembrokeshire\nOccupancy; Specialised Housing\nAutomatic fire suppression System; Residential sprinkler system\n\nMid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service have reported the fire involving a Specialised Housing scheme resulting in the activation of the premises residential sprinkler system. \nBackground \n\nSpecialised housing contains some of are most vulnerable residents of society\, suffering with physical/cognitive\, and mental health issues affecting their ability to react to fire and/or an alarm compromising their ability to escape a fire.\nThe benefits of installing fire sprinklers for this type of occupancy are clearly demonstrated following the outcome of this incident.\n\nIncident \n\nInternal fire involving the communal laundry room.\n2 sprinkler heads actuated.\nContaining/controlling the fire prior to the arrival of the fire service\nOn arrival operational crews identified that the fire had been contained/controlled\nFire contained to the compartment of origin\nRequiring limited offensive firefighting action to fully extinguish the fire.\nNo injuries were reported.\nEnquires are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.\n\nLegislation \n\nUnlike Scotland and Wales\, it is not mandatory to install fire sprinklers in new build specialised housing schemes in England.\nBAFSA\, welcome’s the government’s recent proposal for sprinklers to be fitted in new care homes in England a change we have all been calling for in the fire sector for many years\, we would also encourage government to look at fitting sprinklers in new specialised housing schemes following the lead of Scotland and Wales.\n\nNewgrange Care Home Fire \n\nWhen you compare this to the Newgrange care home fire\, housing are most vulnerable residents of society\, the outcome was so much different.\nThe scene of a major fire in 2017 which broke out in the early hours of the morning. The home was occupied by 35 residents\, sprinklers were not fitted. The fire resulted in 33 elderly and immobile residents being rescued by firefighters\, sadly two residents died because of the fire.\n\nIf sprinklers had been fitted the outcome could have been so much different\, following the fire the coroner raised concerns that sprinkler systems are not mandatory in care homes. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) recommended sprinklers be installed. The home was rebuilt – without fire sprinklers. \n \nCredit HFRS \nFurther guidance \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review\nMid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Nottingham School Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Nottingham Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS)\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 17 March 2023\nTime of call; 14:00\nWhere: Sneinton\, Nottinghamshire\nOccupancy: School\, academy\n\nNFRS have reported the following Nottingham Academy fire resulting in the school commercial sprinkler system activating that clearly identifies the benefits of installing fire suppression systems for schools. \nNottingham Academy is a large academy built on two campuses with a capacity of 3750 pupils\, it is one of only a handful of schools in the country with its own nursery\, primary\, Secondary and Sixth form provision. \nThe Incident \n\nFire crews were mobilised from Carlton\, London Road and Stockhill Fire stations.\nOn arrival\, operational crews identified that a small fire in the nursery office was contained and extinguished by the school’s sprinkler system.\nNo injuries were reported.\nThe cause of the fire is currently under investigation.\n\nWatch Manager Wiggan said: “There was only slight fire damage to the room of origin at the school due to them having the correct sprinkler system in place. Without this\, the fire could have spread rapidly and put the school at risk.” \nThey tell a story…………. \nThe reporting of sprinkler saves tell a story bringing the incident to life\, this incident clearly demonstrates the benefits of sprinklers for both life and property protection. \nSchool fires have a devasting impact on both a school and a community\, every year many schools are damaged or destroyed by fires\, affecting the education of pupils across the country causing millions of pounds worth of damage. \nOn this occasion\, the impact of this school fire was minimal due to the decision at the design stage to install fire sprinklers throughout the school: – \n\nFire\, heat/smoke damage contained to the compartment of origin.\nOther locations within the school were unaffected.\nSchools’ continuity allowing pupils/students to return to normality far more efficiently with considerably less disruption.\n\nWhen you compare this to a recent school fire in Yatton Bristol on the 29 May 2023 where sprinklers were not fitted\, the outcome on this occasion was that the school was destroyed by the fire. \nThe image speaks a thousand words……… \n \nImage credit Avon Fire & rescue Service \nLegislation\, did you know it is mandatory for all new schools in Scotland & centrally funded schools in Wales to be fitted with sprinklers. This is not the case for England\, current guidance when first released in 2007\, acknowledged the important role of sprinklers and stated that “all new schools should have fire sprinklers installed except in a few low-risk schools”. \nFurther Guidance \n\nBAFSA:- Sprinklers in Schools Animation\nBAFSA:- Sprinkler saves review 2021/2022\nNFCC Sprinkler tool kit 2023\nNFCC sprinklers in schools position statement\nNFRS press release\nBristol Live\, fire destroys primary school

SUMMARY:Cleveland Factory Fire Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Image credit Cleveland Fire Brigade \n\nFire Rescue Service; Cleveland Fire Brigade (CFB)\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 14/03/2023\nTime of call; 03:42\nWhere\, Redcar & Cleveland\nType of Premises; Factory\nAutomatic fire suppression System; Sprinklers\n\nCleveland Fire Brigade have reported the above-mentioned incident resulting in the activation of the premises  sprinkler system. \nThe premises \n\nSingle storey portal frame building\nDimensions 73m² x 63m²\nManufacturing\, portfolio of materials for the footwear industry\n\nIncident \n\nAt 03:42 CFRS received a fire call\, mobilising 2 x pumping appliances.\nOn arrival crews identified a fire within plant machinery used to preheat glue which had been contained/controlled by the activation of one pendant sprinkler head located just offset to the plant machinery.\nMinimal firefighter interaction was required with only the activation of 2x dry powder extinguishers.\nSmoke/fire damage was contained to an area of 10-15m²\n25% fire damage to hot melt extrusion system\nThe cause of the fire\, suspected thermostat failure.\n\nBusiness Continuity \nThis incident clearly identifies the benefits of installing sprinklers for businesses\, it is reported that the estimated value of damage following the fire is within the region of £10\,000. The business value is undetermined but could run to several millions. Alternative arrangements are available on site with other plant machinery available therefore no significant interruption to business. \nIt should be remembered sprinkler systems: – \n\nProtects the longevity of businesses in the long term.\nSafeguards against disastrous major financial and equipment losses\nBusinesses back up and running in a short period of time.\n\n\nContaining a potential major fire to only a minor inconvenience.\nPrevents significant damage or destruction of a building by fire.\nProtect jobs.\n\nThis incident clearly backs up the findings of the recent uk research¹ that sprinklers are. \n\n94% Efficient in their ability to operate.\n99% Efficient in Extinguishing or controlling a fire.\n\nEnvironmental Benefits \nOn a regular occurrence\, images from major fires across the country are published on social media and television\, focusing predominately on both fire appliances\, firefighters tackling to extinguish\, control the fire\, along with managing the large smoke plumes\, generated from waste fires. The incident is then soon forgotten\, old news lost in the cloud. \nHowever\, do we consider the adverse consequences on our natural environment? \n\nAir contamination from the fire/smoke plume and the impact it will have on land and water courses.\nThe impact of fire service firefighting activities\, specifically the water run-off from firefighting hoses/jets containing toxic products.\nOther environmental discharges or released from burned material.\n\n This incident clearly identifies that active fire protection systems\, specifically sprinklers should be seen as part of a holistic approach minimising fire damage as part of a greener approach from the fire sector which is often overlooked. \nLinks‑‑ \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/22\nEfficiency and effectiveness of sprinkler systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from fire service data¹\nThink Sprinkler\, Think Environment Sustainability (Bafsa Sprinkler Focus Magazine November 2022)\nCleveland Fire Brigade\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Image credit South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service \n\nFire Rescue Service; South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (SYFRS)\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 3 March 2023\nTime of call; 14:30\nWhere\, Sheffield\nOccupancy; Commercial retail shopping centre\nAutomatic fire suppression System; Commercial sprinkler system\n\nSouth Yorkshire Fire& Rescue Service have reported the following incident involving a fire within a multi-use shopping centre containing retail units\, restaurants\, and screen cinema. \nIncident \n\nOn arrival operational crews identified that a fire within a public toilet cubicle had been extinguished by the activation of 1 sprinkler head.\nNo further firefighting was required by SYFRS.\nIt was established that the cause of the fire was a malicious act.\nFire/smoke\, damage was contained to the compartment of origin.\nNo injuries were reported.\n\nImportance of Management \nIt should be remembered sprinklers control the size of the fire\, reduce the amount of smoke produced. In shopping centres\, it is common practice to protect the commercial unit/shop with sprinklers to control the fire size. Sprinklers are not installed in the malls to prevent overcooling of the smoke\, and the risk of wet slippery surfaces on escape routes. \nShopping centres are one of the most complex buildings that often include a variety of uses within the complex\, leisure areas\, hotels\, apartments\, cinemas\, and offices. Therefore\, require a high standard of management compared to other building uses.
