SUMMARY:City of London Market Commercial Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade\nIncident; Fire\nWhen; 14 December 2022\nWhere\, City of London\nTime of call: 18:15\nTime of Stop: 19:18\nUse of premises; Market\nLocation of incident: Refrigeration Unit\nFixed installation; Automatic fire suppression system (AFSS)\n\nLondon Fire Brigade have reported the above-mentioned 4 pump fire involving a fire within an operational meat market housing a range of stalls and shops resulting in the loss of 3 tonnes of meat within a refrigeration unit. (15 Pig Carcasses) \nThe benefits of installing a commercial sprinkler system for business continuity/life safety is clearly demonstrated following this incident which took place at one of the busiest trading periods of the year. \n\nThe fire was extinguished\, contained/controlled within the ceiling of the refrigeration unit\nThe fire did not spread from compartment of origin\nNo injuries were reported\n\nA relatively small fire was extinguished by the activation of the commercial sprinkler system\, resulting in only a minor inconvenience for the tenants/businesses associated within the market. The market reopened the same evening from midnight with only one shop unit closed due to the fire. \nA London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Sprinklers are the only fire safety system that detects a fire\, suppresses a fire and raises the alarm. “They save lives and protect property and they are especially important where there are vulnerable residents who would find it difficult to escape\, like those with mobility problems.” \nThe Business Sprinkler Alliance\, report that fire is the leading cause of commercial property loss\, with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) noting Uk business with fire property claims of £940 million in 2018. It is why risk-aware businesses understand the importance of physical resilience and recognise the need for effective methods to protect their property. The effective method to do this is through the use of an appropriately designed and installed sprinkler system. \n\nEvidence clearly show that  automatic fire sprinklers prevent large fires because they activate automatically following a fire\nControlling or even extinguishing the blaze before the Fire and Rescue Service arrives.\nThey therefore save lives and protect firefighters who attend incidents\nThey also prevent significant damage or destruction of a building by fire.\nCurrently\, automatic fire sprinklers are not widely used in the UK because the guidance rarely prescribes their use.\n\n  \nSo when are sprinklers required ?\n \nCredit/image  Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service \nLinks/source \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/22\nLFB Press Release\nBusiness Sprinkler Alliance\, sprinkler activation saves leisure facility\nDerbyshire Fire & Rescue Service\, When are sprinklers required

SUMMARY:LFB Match Funding Competition Sprinkler Save
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade (LFB)\nIncident; Fire involving smoking materials\nWhen; 16 October 2022\nTime of call; 16:10\nTime of stop 17:33\nWhere\, Barking\nUse of premises; Specialised Housing consisting of three floors\nFixed installation; Automatic fire suppression system (AFSS)\n\nLondon Fire Brigade/Triangle fire systems  have reported the above-mentioned incident resulting in the activation of the premises residential sprinkler system \n Background \n\nThe benefits of match funding provided by Fire & Rescue Services\, in this case the LFB\, to entice social and private housing providers to assist them with meeting the costs of installing sprinklers within premises housing vulnerable persons clearly justified following the above reported sprinkler activation.\nIn 2014\, London Fire Brigade launched a competition to incentivise housing providers to install sprinklers and to promote the Authorities Sprinkler Strategy\, working to promote the use and adoption of residential sprinkler systems.\nThe London Borough Barking and Dagenham were successful receiving £84\,250 to install a sprinkler system in the above-mentioned extra care housing unit containing 33 flats for elderly residents with support needs completed June 2015.\nFunding was allocated from the Fire Prevention Grant received from the government for fire prevention work\nSeven years following the installation of the residential sprinkler installation\, the benefits of this competition were clear for all to see\, following a fire involving smoking materials which activated the sprinkler system containing/controlled the fire within the dwelling.\nSupporting most recent ¹UK research commissioned by The National Fire Chiefs Council\, National Fire Sprinkler Network\,  supported by The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association.\nThe research report that across all premises types:\nSprinklers are 99% efficient in extinguishing or controlling a fire\nSprinklers are 94% efficient in their ability to operate\n\nPremises residential Sprinkler System Specification \n\nResidential AFSS; installed to BS9251:2014\nCategory; 3 system\nSprinkler heads; Viking VK457\nAlarm; interfaced with building fire alarm system\nWater supply; Town Main\nCoverage; dwellings/communal areas\n\nIncident \n\nFire appliances from Barking\, Milford and East Ham fire stations were mobilised to the fire\nOn arrival crews identified a fire on the second floor within a two roomed flat\nThe premises sprinkler system actuated resulting in three sprinkler heads containing/controlling the fire\nFirefighters wearing breathing apparatus were committed\, extinguishing the fire with one firefighting jet\n50% of the dwelling was damaged by fire\nFirefighters rescued a woman via an internal stairway who was removed to hospital with a further 15 residents evacuated to a place of safety\nThe fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials\n\n Benefits of the sprinkler system \n\nFire contained to compartment of origin\nRapidly reduced the rate of production of heat and smoke allowing\n\n\nThe fire service crucial time to implement their operational tactical plan evacuate the premises\nFlashover prevented\n\nLegislation \n\nIn Scotland and Wales all new build and converted care homes/specialised housing require to have sprinklers fitted\nIn England and Northern Ireland there is no requirement\n\nConclusion \n\nThe decision taken by the LFB in 2014 to launch the match funding sprinkler competition should be applauded\, without this initiative the outcome of this incident could have been so much different.\nFor example\, the Newgrange care home Hertfordshire 2017 was the scene of a major fire which broke out in the early hours of the morning. The home was occupied by 35 residents\, sprinklers were not fitted resulting in firefighters rescuing 33 elderly and immobile residents sadly two residents died because of the fire.\nIf sprinklers had been fitted the outcome could have been so much different\, because of this fire the coroner raised concerns that sprinkler systems are not mandatory in care homes. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service recommended sprinklers be installed. The home was rebuilt – without fire sprinklers installed.\nThis is the second FRS match funding success following the positive Hostel Sprinkler Save reported by Essex Fire Rescue Service on the 28 May 2022 involving a kitchen fire\n\n  \n \n\nNewgrange care home fire\nCredit: Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service\n\nLinks \n\nBAFSA\, Sprinkler Saves Annual Review 2021/2022\nNFCC Sprinkler Week campaign toolkit May 22 sprinkler toolkit\n¹ Efficiency and Effectiveness of Sprinkler Systems in the United Kingdom: An Analysis from Fire Service Data – Optimal Economics 2017\nLFB Press release Winners of match funding sprinkler competition\nEssex Fire Rescue Service match funding Hostel sprinkler save\n\n

SUMMARY:Fire Sprinklers Save Derbyshire School
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service; Derbyshire Fire Rescue Service (DFRS)\nDate of incident; 22 May 2022\nTime of call 09:38\nLocation; Glossopdale School and Sixth Form\, Glossop\nBackground; Purpose built new school occupied 2018\nPurpose group; Educational building\nIncident; Fire\nLocation of Incident: Room\nAutomatic Fire Suppression System (AFSS); Sprinkler System\n\nDFRS\, reported the above-mentioned fire sprinkler that clearly identifies the benefits of installing automatic fire suppression systems for schools. \nOn this occasion protecting this school\, both in terms of life and property protection. \nThe Incident \nThe fire originated in a room located at the rear of the building which was extinguished before the arrival of DFRS. Two people with minor burns received hospital treatment as a result from the fire \nIt is reported that approximately 1m2 of floor space damaged by fire\, smoke damage contained to the compartment of origin \nAutomatic Fire Suppression System \n\nThe system was installed to meet the requirements of BS12845\nWater supply via dedicated capacity tank/Pump\, minimum duration of 30mins\nTwo fire sprinkler heads actuated\n\nBusiness Continuity \nSchool fires have a devasting impact on both a school and a community\, every year many schools are damaged or destroyed by fires\, affecting the education of pupils across the country causing millions of pounds worth of damage. \nOn this occasion\, the impact of this school fire was minimal due to the decision at the design stage to install fire sprinklers throughout the school: – \n\nFire\, heat/smoke damage contained to the compartment of origin\nOther locations within the school were unaffected\nSchools’ continuity allowing pupils/students to return to normality far more efficiently with considerably less disruption\nThe school was closed for only 2 hours the following day allowing for minor housekeeping to be completed\n\n  \nWhen you compare this to the three major school fires in Derbyshire that were all severely damaged by fire in May/October 2020\, where sprinklers were not fitted \n\n St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy\, in Darley Abbey\, 3 October 2020\nRavensdale Infant School\,  5 October 2020\nHarrington Junior school fire 28 May 2020\n\n \nCredit image DFRS\, Ravensdale Infant School \n  \nThese fires have resulted in the agreement of a statement of intent\, between DFRS\, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council\, surrounding sprinklers in new-build schools and those undergoing renovation\, which should be applauded.\n  \n \n\nThis incident clearly demonstrates the importance of protecting educational premises with AFSS:-\n\nWithout the Fire Sprinkler System\, there would have been significant damage to the school\, potential risk of injury to members of staff\, firefighters\n\nLegislation \n\nCurrently sprinklers are only mandatory in new school buildings in Scotland and Wales but not in England and Northern Ireland.\nBuilding Bulletin 100 (Design document for new schools) is currently being reviewed\, highlighting that the sprinkler expectation will be removed. Our position is that that government explicitly maintains the sprinkler expectation in the revised BB100 publication so that fewer schools are damaged and destroyed by fire.\n\n Links \n\nBAFSA;-Sprinklers In Schools animation\nDFRS; Statement of Intent-Fire Protection measures in Schools\nDFRS; Press release\nNFCC; Sprinkler Tool Kit 2022\n\n

SUMMARY:Elgin Academy Sprinkler Activation

SUMMARY:Elgin High School Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:Fire Rescue Service: Scottish Fire Rescue Service (SFRS)\nIncident: Fire\nWhen: 25 April 2022\nTime of call: 12:44 pm\nLocation: Elgin High School\, Elgin\nOccupancy: Comprehensive Education Facility\nAutomatic fire suppression System: Fire Sprinklers\n\n SFRS have reported the following incident; \nBackground \nElgin High School is a three storey\, £30 million six-year comprehensive facility accommodating up to 800 pupils which opened in October 2017\, replacing the old high school building. The new school is a widely used community facility with sport facilities\, performance facilities open to the public. \nAutomatic Fire Sprinklers \n\nSince 2010 all new built Scottish schools are required to have automatic fire sprinklers fitted\, protecting both the occupants and the building in line with Scottish Building Standards for non-domestic buildings.\nThis is not the case for England\, current guidance when first released in 2007\, acknowledged the important role of sprinklers and stated that “all new schools should have fire sprinklers installed except in a few low-risk schools”.\nUnfortunately\, it is possible for designers and developers to circumvent the improvement in areas such as automatic fire suppression systems by using other building design guidance. The outcome schools not installed with fire sprinklers.\n\nThe Incident \n\nTwo fire rescue appliances were mobilised to a fire involving the school toilet cubicles on the second floor\, one breathing apparatus crew consisting of two wearers were committed to extinguish the fire.\nUpon entry\, it was identified the sprinkler system\, actuated controlling/containing the fire to within the compartment of origin. The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet\, no injuries were reported\nMinimal fire and smoke damage limited to the fully enclosed WC toilet\nToilet paper was established to be the material ignited first\n\nAutomatic Fire Sprinkler System \n\nWet pipe System\nActuation\, 1x concealed fire sprinkler head\n\nBusiness continuity \n\nThis incident was a relatively minor inconvenience due to the prompt activation of the sprinkler system preventing a major fire\, proving once again that schools are back up and running in a short period of time. The benefits of sprinklers clearly demonstrated protecting this £30 million comprehensive facility.\n\nThe outcome of this fire could have been so much different\,  if this incident had been in England. \nFor example\, The Selsey Academy fire\, August 2016 sprinklers were not fitted\, the outcome the school left destroyed following the fire. The Academy was rebuilt would you believe without sprinklers!!!!!!!!!! \nImagine what it feels like to lose everything you have been striving for because a fire\nin your school has destroyed your course work\, your art\, your pets\, your memories… And then to discover that it could all have been protected if automatic fire sprinklers had been present. The confusion and emotional distress can be unfathomable for the most vulnerable in our communities \n  \n                \nImages\, credit West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service \nLinks \n\nThe British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association: Why schools need sprinklers\nSFRS\nNational Fire Chiefs Council\, Sprinklers in Schools Position Statement\nPublic Sector Build Journal\, Fire Risk In Schools And The Need For Sprinklers

SUMMARY:Leicestershire Distribution Warehouse Sprinkler Actuation
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nFire Rescue Service; Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service (LFRS)\nDate of Incident 16 March 2022\nTime of call; 21:30\nLocation of incident; Magna Park\, Leicestershire (Lutterworth)\nUse of building; Warehouse\nType of incident; fire\nFixed firefighting system: Sprinkler System (Wet Pipe)\nWater Supply\, water storage tank\n2x sprinkler heads actuate\n\n  \n  \n       \nImages\, credit LFRS \n  \nThe Incident \n\n\nLFRS have reported the following fire requiring the mobilisation of five appliances from Leicestershire and Warwickshire FRS.\n\n\nThe location of the fire was in the distribution warehouse involving the pallet racking system used to store a variety of goods.\n\n\nThe cause of the fire is under investigation; however\, the seat of the fire was at low level spreading vertically to the pallets above due to the combustible material/fire loading.\n\n\nThe fire was not immediately contained/suppressed by the sprinkler system as in rack sprinkler protection was not installed\, in rack sprinkler systems on activation release water into a targeted area to minimise damage\, downtime for the facility.\n\n\nThis is advantageous as it ensures that fires that begin in the lower/middle areas of the rack can be extinguished before it consumes surrounding combustible material allowing further potential fire spread\n\n\nThe sprinkler system was located above the top layer of racking\, resulting in a delay for the predetermined temperature to be reached allowing the sprinkler heads to actuate.\n\n\nTwo sprinkler heads actuated containing/suppressing the fire preventing further fire spread. The benefit of which allowed operational crews time to establish their operational tactical plan prior to committing crews to extinguish the fire using Breathing Apparatus and one hose reel jet\n\n\nA forklift was used to remove the damaged pallets affected by the fire. No injuries were reported\n\n\nFire Data Warehouses \nFire data relating to primary fires attended by FRSs in the UK for Warehouses where sprinklers were present\, operated for the ¹financial years 2018/19 to 2020/21 accounted for 59 fires of which 17 operated. The impact of the sprinkler system in controlling or extinguishing the fire is known for all 17 fires where the system operated\, this data can be used to measure the performance reliability of the system.\nPerformance reliability measures the effectiveness of the system when it is activated and is defined where the sprinkler system contained/controlled\, extinguished the fire.\n\n\nFrom the 17 sprinkler activations.\n\n\n8 x fires were contained or controlled (47.5%)\n\n\n8 x fires were extinguished (47.5%)\n\n\n1x fire did not contain/control (6%)\n\n\nThis incident clearly identifies once again the benefits of installing sprinklers in warehouses re-enforced by the above-mentioned data. \nThe inclusion of a sprinkler system for property protection can\n\n\nPrevent major financial and equipment losses\,\n\n\nPrevent a potential major fire\, turning it into a minor incident\n\n\nPrevent a business from going out of business\n\n\nLinks;\n\n\nBAFSA; Warehouses & modern logistics facilities\, our vision we believe that automatic fire sprinklers are an essential implement in the business resilience tool kit\n\n\nLeicestershire Fire & Rescue Service; website\n\n\n¹Source: FOI Requests for Incident Recording System Data relating to primary fires attended by FRSs in which sprinklers were present for England\, Scotland\, and Wales for the financial years 2018/19 to 2020/21

DESCRIPTION:  \n\nFire Rescue Service; Scottish Fire and Rescue Service\nDate of Incident; 20 February 2022\nTime of call; 21:49\nOccupancy; School/leisure centre\nLocation of Fire; Server Room\nIgnition Source: Electrical\n2x sprinkler heads operated\n\nScottish Fire & Rescue Service have reported the above-mentioned incident involving an electrical fire within the school’s server room located on the first floor. \nTwo sprinkler heads activated which contained\, extinguished the fire before arrival of fire crews at Garnock Community Campus\, fire damage was restricted to under 10m². \nThe benefits of installing fire sprinklers in schools clearly identified \n\nProtecting both the occupants and the building\nReducing potential fire\, smoke damage\nReducing potential disruption to students education\n\nUnfortunately\, this is not the case throughout the country fire sprinklers are mandatory in new school buildings in Scotland and Wales\, but not in England or Northern Ireland. \nDespite a growing acceptance amongst the public\, and some politicians of the value of automatic fire sprinklers\, there is a continuing reluctance to fit sprinklers in new schools in both England and Northern Ireland. \nWithin the nations of the UK there are different governmental approaches to the fitting of sprinklers in schools. Whilst the English government takes an almost “laissez faire” approach to this vital topic the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales take a proactive approach – sprinklers are mandatory in all new and substantially refurbished schools in both countries. \nThe British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association is calling on the Government to require the installation of automatic fire sprinklers in all new built and substantially refurbished schools in England and Northern Ireland and we are not a lone voice\, leading bodies in the built environment have signed a joint statement to this effect\, including the retrofitting of sprinklers in existing school buildings when relevant refurbishment takes place. \nLinks \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association; Sprinklers in Schools Information File 1\nBusiness Sprinkler Alliance; Fire Sprinklers make the grade at St Nicholas Primary School\nNational Fire Chiefs Council; Responds to the Government’s proposed revision to its fire safety guidance for schools\n\n

SUMMARY:Ilford Academy School Sprinkler Save
DESCRIPTION:Date of Incident; 24 November 2021\nTime of Incident; 12:51\nLocation; Ilford\nFire Rescue Service; London Fire Brigade\nOccupancy; Academy school of 3 floors\nLocation of fire; Changing room\nSprinkler System; BS12845\, water supply town mains booster pumps\n\n\nLFB have reported the above-mentioned incident involving the actuation of the Academy sprinkler system following a fire in a waste bin located in a changing room.\nOne concealed sprinkler head operated suppressing\, extinguishing the fire preventing the fire from spreading from the room of origin.\nThe sprinkler system was interfaced with the fire detection and fire alarm system allowing the alarm to be raised.\nTotal property area damaged by fire estimated to be under 5 square meters\, the cause of the fire is under investigation.\n\nThis incident clearly identifies the benefits of sprinklers in schools\, It is ¹reported  in the last 5 years school fires have: – \n\nDestroyed the equivalent of 1\,100 classrooms\nDestroyed 47 Primary /secondary school buildings following 2\,300 incidents\nMore than 74\,000 square metres\, an area equivalent to 10 football pitches of teaching facilities have been damaged by fire in this time\nIn the period from April 2015- April 2020\, 1\,467 primary schools and 834 secondary schools’ fires were reported\n\nThese figures clearly highlight that the installation of sprinklers should be made compulsory in England following the lead of Wales\, Scotland. \nGavin Tomlinson\, Sprinkler Lead\, National Fire Chiefs Council\, said: “The case for sprinklers in schools is extremely compelling. The disruptive effect these fires have on whole communities is stark and the cost of the fire is felt well beyond rebuild costs. The impact can be devastating and\, in the year where education has been so severely disrupted\, school fires put huge additional pressure on the education service and parents. \n“Schools are important community assets which need to be protected and we know that sprinklers are both highly reliable and effective. When sprinklers operate\, they will control or extinguish a fire in 99% of cases. \n“The NFCC will continue to call for the mandatory fitting of sprinkler systems in all new and refurbished schools in England.” \nLinks \nBAFSA Year book 2021/2022; Further reading highlighting the impact of “Fires In schools” can be found in the article drafted by Ritchie O’Connell \nBAFSA Year book 2021/2022; Further information “Pushing the government on the use of sprinklers” can be found in the article drafted by Gavin Tomlinson\, National Fire Chiefs Council \nZurich; Press release fires in schools \n¹Source; Zurich press release 8 March 2021\, Chris Johnson\, Zurich UK Media relations \n

SUMMARY:Swindon School Sprinkler Save Update
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nDate of incident; 22 November 2021\nTime of call; 1:46\nDorset and Wiltshire Fire Rescue Service\nOccupancy; Single Storey Primary School\nLocation; Lydiard Millicent Swindon\nFire; Ground floor toilet\, suppressed by school sprinkler system\n\nDorset and Wiltshire Fire Rescue Service have provided the following comprehensive update for the above mentioned incident highlighting the clear benefits of installing sprinklers in schools. BS12845\, sprinkler system was installed during the construction of the new school in 2011 for life safety\, property protection. \nA fire was discovered within a toilet and cloakroom area on the ground floor involving the the ignition of a toilet roll and its plastic holder causing a single sprinkler head to activate\, extinguishing the fire and limiting smoke and heat damage. \nOn arrival operational crews found that the fire has been completely extinguished by the sprinkler system proceeded to assist the school in isolating the system. Business continuity is paramount following any operational incident allowing operational crews to interact with the  sprinkler system  preventing unwanted water egress. \nIt should be noted:- \n\nThe fire was extinguished before the arrival of the FRS\nFlashover was prevented\nThe fire was contained to compartment of origin\nSafety of operational crews was reinforced\nNo reported injuries to pupils or staff\n\nThe school was closed for the remainder of the day of the incident\, and for 2 subsequent days to make repairs to the toilet area  with the students switching to remote learning during this period. \nGroup Manager Tim Gray said “Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service continue to lobby for the inclusion of sprinkler systems in all premises\, particularly in education buildings. The speed of response from the installed system and its control over the fire growth undoubtedly ensured that fire damage was kept to a minimum allowing the school to re-open within 2 days of the fire with as little disruption to the school as possible and no loss of valuable work or property \nThe Swindon Advertiser reported\, the school is part of the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust. Ceo Jez Piper said: “The fire was quickly contained\, and the school was evacuated very quickly and effectively\, with no harm to any pupil or member of staff. “The school sprinkler system worked well\, and the fire brigade attended the site very quickly\, ensuring that the fire was fully out and to secure the area” \nWhen you compare this to a similar incident attended by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service on the 3rd January 2017\, the service attended a serious fire at Avenue Primary School in Warminster. On arrival. operational crews found a well developed blaze within a classroom block. Sprinklers were not fitted\, the damage was extensive but crews were able to stop the spread of fire to further school buildings. \nDorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service\, like all fire rescue services continue to urge\, lobby local education and environmental leaders to install school sprinkler installations. \n\nThe impact of fires in schools was clearly highlighted in the article contained in the BAFSA\, Sprinkler focus magazine November 2020 edition\, highlighting 3 school fires where sprinklers were not fitted.\nSprinkler saves in England is a rare event\, it is not mandatory for new schools in England to be fitted with sprinklers which is already the case in Wales since 2014 and Scotland since 2010.\nDespite a growing acceptance amongst the public\, and some politicians of the value of automatic fire sprinklers\, there is a continuing reluctance to fit sprinklers in new schools in England.\n\nFurther background on this anomaly can be found in the BAFSA article on schools. \n[1] Fire Incident data set for 2018/19 to 20/21 where sprinklers are reported as operated following a fire in a primary/infant school in England \n\n\n\nOccupancy\n2018/19\n2019/20\n2020/21\nTotal\n\n\nprimary/infant school\n0\n0\n3\n3\n\n\n\nOn average for the 3-year period\,  1 sprinkler saves a year for a primary/infant school in England\,\, \nLinks \n\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association\, sprinkler focus magazine\, 3 school fires where sprinklers not fitted\nBritish Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association\, Schools feature.\nThe Swindon Advertiser\nDorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority\n\n[1] Source: FOI Requests for Incident Recording System Data relating to primary fires attended by FRSs in which sprinklers were present for England\, Scotland\, and Wales for the financial years 2018/19 to 2020/21

Sprinklers are not installed in the malls to prevent overcooling of the smoke\, and the risk of wet slippery surfaces on escape routes \nShopping centres are one of the most complex buildings that often include a variety of uses within the complex\, leisure areas\, hotels\, apartments\, cinemas and offices. Therefore\, retail centres require a high standard of management compared to other building uses. \nManagement is key ensuring the premises fire safety systems are operable in the event of a fire including sprinklers\, fire alarm system\, dry/wet risers\, smoke extraction units and fire curtains \nTo highlight this\, London Fire Brigade published an open letter in 2020\, to those responsible for fire safety in shopping centres. SUMMARY:Luton Shopping Center Sprinkler Save
DESCRIPTION:Basement Shopping Center\, Sprinkler Save\n\nDate of incident :- 16 September 2021\nLocation :-Luton Mall shopping centre\nOccupancy:- Commercial /retail unit\,\nLocation of fire :-Basement\nCause of fire:- Electrical intake box\nInjuries/fatalities:- None reported\n\nThe benefits of installing commercial sprinkler systems in shopping centers clearly demonstrated once again following the recently reported Shepherd’s Bush Mall sprinkler save dated 9 September 2021 \nIt has been reported in Luton Today/ Bedfordshire Live that a fire was suppressed by the shopping Centre sprinkler system before the arrival of the fire and rescue service. \nA Bedfordshire Fire spokesman said: “Firefighters from Luton\, Dunstable\, Stopsley\, Leighton Buzzard and Toddington attended a small electrical fire in Poundland. “The area was heavily smoke-logged and firefighters in breathing apparatus used a hose reel and mains jets to extinguish it. They also used fans to help ventilation.” \nMall Luton general manager Roy Greening said: “The sprinkler system activated immediately and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries.”Luton fire brigade was called and helped ventilate the unit before declaring it was safe at around 1am.” \nDid you know \n\nA sprinkler system will control the size of the fire\, reducing the amount of smoke generated.\nIn shopping centres it is common practice to protect shop units only with sprinklers to control the fire size.\nOver 4\,000 fires occur in retail outlets every year.\nOn average\, large fires cause over 5 million pounds of damage every year in shops. (This excludes fires under £250\,000).\nSprinklers are not widely used in the UK because the guidance rarely prescribes their use.\nIt has been proven sprinklers prevent large fires because they activate automatically over a fire\, controlling or even extinguishing the blaze before the Fire and Rescue Service arrives.\nThey therefore save lives and protect firefighters who attend incidents.\nPrevent significant damage or destruction of a building by fire.\nA sprinkler system can prevent major financial and equipment losses.\n\nLinks \n\nShepherd’s Bush Mall Sprinkler Save\nBAFSA\, information file 4 Retail\nBedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service\nLuton today\nBedfordshire Live\n\nImage :-Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service

SUMMARY:Erith Ocado Customer Fulfilment Centre Fire Suppressed by Sprinkler Activation
DESCRIPTION:On the 16 July 2021\, The commercial sprinkler system (FM Global Early Suppression Fast Response)  activated at Ocado’s three-storey customer fulfilment centre (CFC) assisting  operational crews from the LFB to suppress\, extinguish a deep seated warehouse fire. The London Fire Brigade were called at 12:42\, mobilising 15 fire appliances dispatched from neighbouring stations including Bexley\, Millwall\, Lee Green and Greenwich. \nThe cause of the fire according to the statement released by Ocado appears to have been caused by the collision of three bots on the grid\, no one was injured and the damage was limited to 1 per cent of its grid. \nThis incident clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of properly controlling a fire using sprinklers as part of a holistic approach containing fire spread. Sprinklers not only protect lives\, they protect property\, businesses and jobs. Sprinklers have been shown to contain and extinguish fires in 99% of cases. \nWhen you compare the above mentioned incident to the article by Tom Roche\, secretary of the Business Sprinkler Alliance highlighting two buildings destroyed by fire. the benefits of sprinklers are clear for everyone to see \nWhat are the fire safety building regulations for the requirement of sprinklers in industrial and commercial buildings \nApproved Document “B” provides building design guidance to satisfy the requirements of the Fire Safety Building Regulations. The guidance for sprinklers to be installed in  industrial and commercial buildings\, is that: \n\nSprinklers be used in single storey warehouses larger than 20\,000m2\nSprinklers are not required  for industrial buildings.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sheffield hospital healthcare laundry room fire
DESCRIPTION:The effectiveness of sprinklers were clearly demonstrated following a fire caused by an industrial gas powered ironing machine which suppressed and extinguished the fire before the arrival of South Yorkshire Fire Service\, no further action was required. The outcome of could have been so different if sprinklers had not been installed. During 2008/2009 five significant fires took place involving healthcare premises in London which resulted in partial or full evacuation. \nFollowing these incidents NHS London published the report “Review of five London hospital fires and their management” which illustrated  the critical importance of being prepared for emergencies. None of the five sites had AFSS installed at the time of the incidents\, \nDisappointingly an opportunity was lost as the report made no reference to the benefits/impact  that the installation of AFSS may have brought to these incidents. \nThe impact of fire on UK hospitals and healthcare premises is significant. Data sourced by NHS Digital confirms there were 1701 fires in all trusts in 2015/16  and 1462  fires in 2016/17. Mental Health Trusts accounted for 1138 or 67% of fires in 2015/16 and 895 or 61% fires in 2016/2017. Over these two years\, 88 people were injured in NHS Trust fires\, with 64 of these people being injured in fires related to Mental Health Trusts. There were four deaths in trust fires\, three accounted for by Mental Health Trusts. Further guidance on sprinklers in healthcare premises can be found in the Welsh Health Estates Guidance Note:Sprinkler systems in healthcare premises

SUMMARY:Business premises\, East Sussex
DESCRIPTION:East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has praised a business in Hastings for installing the sprinklers system\, which stopped a small fire quickly spreading throughout the building. \nUpon arrival\, crews found a small fire located in the fan unit\, which had been quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system. \nAndrew Gausden\, Business Safety Manager said: “This is a timely reminder to other companies to invest in a sprinkler system which could protect your business from severe fire damage.A sprinkler system really can make a difference\, in 2019 we attended a similar fire locally which resulted in the total loss of a business – sprinklers would have made the difference. \n“Sprinkler systems are designed to contain a fire ensuring businesses are often up and running within a short period of time due to limited damage.”
