LFB have reported the above-mentioned incident that clearly identifies the benefits of installing a bespoke AFSS as part of a holistic approach to protect business from the impact of a industrial fire.
The Incident
- On arrival operational crews identified a fire within a single-story recycling centre
- The conveyor belt and the hopper of a 20-tonne industrial paper shredder was alight
- 20 people had left the building before the arrival of the brigade.
- The AFSS actuated where it was identified it was having limited impact containing/controlling the fire
- The premises deluge system was therefore manually operated to actuate, flooding the area with water to prevent the fire from spreading
Outcome
- 10% of the conveyor belt/hopper were damaged by fir
- Fire was likely accidental
- Battery discarded amongst paper to be recycled
- AFSS contained/controlled the fire
Business continuity
The response time is critical when protecting critical expensive plant/machinery or high-risk areas from fire, the quicker the fire can be detected and extinguished, it will: –
- Reduce to damage to machinery, plant and property
- Production loss kept to a minimum
- Safety of staff reinforced
- Reduce the effect of fire on the environment
You have to ask the question what would the outcome of been if suppression had not been installed?
