Summary

On the 7 June 2026 at 01.32am, it is reported that the building sprinkler system fitted within a retail premises activated preventing the fire located in the external void of the building canopy from spreading to the shop floor area of the premises. The radiant heat generated from the fire activated one sprinkler head in the main building.

This incident identifies sprinkler systems can safeguard assets, minimise financial loss, and bolster business resilience by controlling or extinguishing fires prior to the arrival of emergency services, allowing for rapid resumption of normal operations and mitigating economic and social impacts.

Reaffirming sprinkler systems are reliable and effective reinforcing the findings from the 1Optimal economics report, commissioned by the National Fire Chief Council and the National Fire Sprinkler Network, on the role of sprinklers in controlling and extinguishing fires as part of a comprehensive fire strategy. The evidence indicates that sprinklers have an operational reliability of 95% when they do operate, they extinguish the fire on 99% of occasions on a wide range of buildings.

The incident

  • Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MWWFRS) despatched pumping appliances from local stations to reports of a fire.
  • The fire was located within an external canopy on the building’s front façade above the trolley park.
  • Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus were committed to tackle the fire.
  • Removing the external canopy soffit, exposing the ceiling timber joists, and found that the fire had spread along the joists into the main building.
  • The radiant heat generated from the fire activated one sprinkler head in the main building which contributed to containing the shielded fire until extinguished by firefighters using firefighting media.
  • Following confirmation, the fire was all out firefighters isolated the sprinkler system isolation valve in the pump house.
  • Stop message confirming the fire was all out received by MWWFRS control at 04:33 hours.
  • Enquires are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire, initial indications are that the fire was caused by an external light fitting.

Sprinkler System

  • BS EN 12845.
  • Sprinkler head 68c upright 15mm.
  • Category OH3.
  • Pump fed water supply.
  • Isolation valve located in pump house.

 Conclusion

This incident demonstrates how an Automatic Water Suppression System.

  • As part of a package of fire safety measures can contain a fire before it can escalate, limiting fire damage and preserving business continuity.
  • Enhances the resilience of buildings and businesses against fire impact, playing a crucial role in preventing major losses and ensuring safety as part of an overall fire strategy.
  • Allowed prompt incident resolution and earlier release of resources, supporting continued emergency response and giving crews greater confidence when tackling fires in sprinkler protected buildings

For change, we need the evidence

To increase the presence of sprinklers in the built environment we require the evidence, to conduct effective advocacy and policy lobbying. If you have knowledge of a sprinkler incident which will contribute to this initiative, forward the pertinent details using the sprinkler activation reporting form available at www.sprinklersaves.co.uk

if you want to make a difference working in the fire sector, we need your assistance.
