A picture is worth a thousand words, this image was captured following a fire within an independent living complex which was successfully extinguished by the activation of one sprinkler head within a flat. The fire was caused by a candle which fell on to a settee, the elderly resident was asleep in the armchair who was alerted by the activation which prevented a fire related death or serious injury.
This incident clearly identifies the benefits of residential sprinklers for life safety playing a significant role, as part of an appropriate package of fire safety measures reducing the impact of fire on people, property, and the environment.
- Reducing the rate of heat and smoke, allowing more time for the occupants to escape to a place of safety or be rescued.
- Conditions for flashover diminished in room of origin.
- Fire contained to room of origin preventing the fire compromising the means of escape.
Providing effective fire protection requires both passive and active elements working in unison and complementing the roles of one another.

- To make sprinklers the norm and not the exception – we need the evidence.
- Encouraging the fire rescue service/sprinkler industry to promote, collate, report sprinkler activations to Sprinkler Saves UK will help to create a central and comprehensive record of fire incidents where sprinklers played their role in containing/controlling or extinguishing the fire.
